Players' choice: Socks up or down and why? | NRL.com

It's a fashion trend that, for the most part, has gone out of the game at the elite level.

Does your favourite NRL or NRLW player wear their socks up or down, and is there a reason as to why?

NRL.com asks our NRLW stars some big-hitting questions each week throughout the 2022 season.

Titans captain Brittany Breayley-Nati: Socks down because I feel like I’ve got little short, stumpy legs so I try and make them look a little bit longer.

Dragons captain Kezie Apps: One hundred per cent up, it's not even a debate. I'm always about having them up, I'm old-school respectful. I feel like you have to be. I'll keep them up until the day I retire.

Dragons forward Holli Wheeler: Down. Always down. I’ve just never been a socks-up person. I give Kezie absolute hell for it so down every day, all day.

Roosters captain Isabelle Kelly: I wear them down but only because half the time the socks don't get over my calves. I'm not lying.

NRLW question time: Who will have a breakout season?

Eels co-captain Tiana Penitani: Always down because they feel uncomfortable when they're up and if ever I have one run or make one tackle they slide down anyway and are uneven so if I start with them down it's one less thing I have to think about on the field.

Roosters prop Sarah Togatuki: I feel a bit weird when they're all the way up. I prefer mine down but it's more a comfort thing.

Knights five-eighth Kirra Dibb: I'm a socks-up girl, straight away. When I was a kid my dad put the mentality in me that you are given a jersey or uniform to represent its colours and part of the colours are the socks. That's the intention of the uniform and you've got to do that proud.

Broncos prop Chelsea Lenarduzzi: Down, I don’t really have a reason though. I think some of the boys started doing it in the 2000s so it became cooler I guess. A few girls still rock the old-school style though. Looking at you Ali Brigginshaw.

Titans centre Evania Pelite: I play with them down, or more halfway. I like to show off my calves. I think they're my best asset so you've got to work with what you've got!

Dragons five-eighth Taliah Fuimaono: I play with them scrunched down as much as I can because I feel like my legs are too stumpy if I have them up.

Knights prop Millie Boyle: Definitely down. I feel like only old people play with their socks up. Kezie Apps and Ali Brigginshaw are very traditional. Rachael Pearson has them up too so basically if you're hitting 30 you're playing with them up.

NRLW question time: Best thing about being an NRLW player?

Broncos captain Ali Brigginshaw: I’m a socks-up girl, everyone knows that. They say it’s because of my age but it’s a thing that I have always done and I will never change. Socks up as a kid and socks are still up now.

Titans halfback Lauren Brown: Down, because it's just comfier and if they're up they just slip down anyway so they may as well just stay down from the start.
